Proxima B 04:15
Oh this world is startin' to bring me down The oceans risin' and we're all gonna drown But there's a place where you and I can go Where we can start this mess all over On Proxima B Bathed in the glow of Centauri On Proxima B Careless and free Don't try to tell me that there's no second acts So say your goodbyes and get your suitcase packed Cuz what's the point in tryin' to save this place If there's another out in outer space On Proxima B From where return isn't guaranteed On Proxima B The stars are a sea On Proxima B Bathed in the glow of Centauri On Proxima B Careless and free You and I are gonna get it right We won't make the same mistakes twice But everybody's startin' to figure it out And our little planet's slowly drawin' a crowd On Proxima B I remember when it was just you and me On Proxima B Careless and Free On Proxima B From where return isn't guaranteed On Proxima B The stars are a sea

What happened to you? You're not the same Something in your head Made a violent change It's in your head It's in your head It's in your head You call it religion You're full of shit Was she really worth it? She cost you your life She'll never leave your side She's gonna be your wife It's in your head It's in your head It's in your head You call it romance You're full of shit Your brain is clay What's going on? You picked up a bible And now you're gone It's in your head It's in your head It's in your head You call it religion You're full of shit You never had You never will Filler

about

Benjamin Gibbard debuted live stripped-down acoustic versions of "Proxima B" during the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum virtual concert Space Songs: Through the Distance, and during his weekly livestream performances from his home in Seattle. This is the fully fleshed-out studio version of "Proxima B", paired with b-side "Filler," a revelatory piano-vocal cover that brings Gibbard's trademark melancholy to the straight-edge DC hardcore classic by Minor Threat.

"This one I wrote a while ago and I was going to have it out as a single for my solo tour this spring," explains Gibbard. "It's about a planet that was discovered deep, deep in the cosmos, called Proxima B. The three things you need to know about Proxima B to understand the song are: One, there's a planet called Proxima B that they think has water on it. It's somewhat Earth-like. Secondly, it orbits the star called Centauri. And three, there's been a lot of talk of 'Ooh, maybe we can get there at some point.' So I wrote this song in response to that."

"Promixa B" was mixed by fellow Seattleite Michael Lerner of Telekinesis, who also played drums and sang backing vocals to the track. Limited-edition 7" vinyl and cassette versions of the single will also be released via Gibbard's long-dormant label imprint Bedside Recordings (which last released two long-out-of-print split-singles in 2003 from The Mountain Goats/John Vanderslice and David Bazan/Casey Foubert). This new single is available for pre-order through Death Cab's web-store now.
